This is a creative picture! I really love all the intricate little details, the little strokes in his clothes and the mossy ground and his fuzzy face.

While I like the somber feel and the grayish tones, I think the picture might look better if he stood out a little bit more against the background. His fur, especially, is really the sameish color as the sky, and his left (our right) fist is almost completely lost. You just don't see it.

On his pose-- I'm not entirely sure why he's holding the axe. He looks like a humble warrior hedgehog (which sounds cute just saying it) but initially I thought he was taking an aggressive stance, as in, he was preparing to swing it at us... which wouldn't make sense with the way he's holding it. I think if you were to do it over, you could have further relaxed his stance, or made it more aggressive, or made him look celebratory, depending on how you vision him in your mind.

You certainly know how to draw and I had to look hard to find any potential improvements. You did a fantastic job on this picture and can only continue to improve with practice. Good work!

lol - have you seen the bit about the real Egil having a rare bone disorder that mutated his bones? you should develop this into illustrated book. great job!

No, I had no idea :XD: But that sort of explains that strange depiction of him on the cover of the saga! Thank you :D

np - my pet theory is that Egil was a neanderthal / human hybrid. if you read his description in the saga closely it fits

Cool! I just read an article that claims Egil suffered from Paget's disease of bone. How would you account for the physical difficulties he apparently had if he was neanderthal? That would mean he simply would have looked different, but not deformed or anything. It's been ages since I read any articles :XD: I've missed this.

Hi, yah there are some rebuttals to the Paget's disease theory which point out how debilitating it is, yet Egil despite his difficulties was able to fight on into his old age. Doesn't seem to compute. Then there is the difficulty of how he would have acquired the disease. It is true you can get it from volcanic ash, but unless the saga is wrong about his timeline he wasn't in such places long enough to get it. Googling pictures of other Paget's sufferer's will show images of people with limbs so misshapen they could have never sustained the vigorous viking lifestyle Egil account has him lead.  I really enjoyed the article though, it is possible he had some lesser variant or mutation of Pagets maybe. If I recall right - Egil's father and grandfather were supposed to have similar appearance - which got me thinking. No volcanic ash in Norway were they were born, hum maybe Egil's stature was hereditary. I'm not saying full blown Neanderthal - but maybe just enough extra strength, higher pain threshold, and cold adaptation to throw him into a different category and make him such an exceptional character. Genetic testing is revealing some Europeans have much higher distribution of Neanderthal genes as compared to baseline humans. Fascinating to speculate, this accounts for the Norse tales of giants and trolls. Really interesting stuff though, however which way you want to take it

Haha wow, you really do know your stuff. What is it you do, may I ask?

Yeah, I watched a series on the BBC that explained about Neanderthal genes in Europeans (starring Eddie Izzard, he is apparently more Neanderthal than most people :giggle:). That was really interesting. And YES, that would certainly be a good explanation for giants and trolls :D

:giggle: I'm glad you like it! I am actually quite seriously considering writing a children's book based on Egill. What could be more perfect for children than a hedgehog warrier who speaks in rhymes?
