My dad bought me a gingerbread house kit for Christmas 2007. It stood on my desk for a year. This Christmas, after having seen Juha's gingerbread house ([link]), I challenged him, saying I would make a much prettier one.
It was a Total Disaster.
The gingerbread parts were broken, because I had accidentally droppped the box, so I needed to fix that first before I could put it together. This proved much harder than I had imagined. Molten sugar is terrible stuff. It was Everywhere, except for where it should go. There were thin, sugary wires all over the kitchen. I burned my fingers thrice (molten sugar is HOT, I tell you), and I got a huge blister on my thumb. As soon as the sugar left the pan on the fire, it started to congeal, and it would only stick to my knife, and not to the gingerbread. The icing (egg without yolk, some lemon juice, and powdered sugar) turned out to be too thin, even though I put in much more sugar than the recipe told me, and it ran down the sides in stead of sticking to the roof in nice swirls.
As soon as I notice that I'm failing in such a thing, I'd so just give up, take that house and eat the damn thing lol. This tutorial made me laugh lol. But sorry to hear about your burns and such, must have been horrible. I on the other hand get cut by knives in the stupidest ways possible lol.
And doesn't actually look that bad anyway.
Looked kinda decent in the end, anyway.
